National AC Day Is July 17th ac

National AC Day calls for different ways to commemorate the day and appreciate the invention that has changed many lives. There are a few different ways homeowners can go about this.

  • Turn It Off: July 17th is sure to be a hot one, but try to turn the AC off for a few hours. It will give homeowners a tiny glimpse into what it felt like to live in a home before air conditioning was invented. Doing so will undoubtedly make homeowners even a little more appreciative of what the world has now.
  • Relax In it: Once homeowners have taken the time to turn the AC off and appreciate how much it helps the world, they can turn it back on and relax in it the rest of the day. Don’t do anything outside of the house, and enjoy the day indoors! Or go to a shopping mall, grocery store, or movie theater to appreciate the AC in those places.

Who Invented the AC?

Willis Carrier. If the name isn’t familiar now, it will be after today. Willis Carrier invented the air conditioner in 1902 in New York. That’s right, the air conditioner was invented right here in America, and Carrier didn’t even mean to invent something that would cool down homes and businesses, per se. He meant to create something that would help to cool down printers.

Now, more than 100 years later, the world continues to enjoy its original invention in every single indoor facility in America and around the world. In the last 100 years, his design hasn’t even been tampered with or changed all that much. And it is very rare to walk into any building that doesn’t have a cooling system installed.

Here’s How the Phrase “Summer Blockbuster” Came About

Willis Carrier’s invention even brought about the term “summer blockbuster.” It was in the 1930s when businesses - like movie theaters - started installing air conditioners. Many homes during this time still didn’t have cooling systems installed. So, many people would flock to the movie theaters to escape the heat and enjoy a movie while enjoying the air conditioning.

The term got so popular that newspapers and media outlets started using the term when new summer movies came out.
