What is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is an electrically powered unit that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another. Heat pumps are not a particularly new technology – refrigerators and air conditioners are both common examples. Heat pump efficiency is measured with the heating rating system (HSPF) or the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. Basically, the higher the number, the greater the efficiency. How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps pump heat into your home in winter and pump heat out in the summer. They constantly move warm air from indoors to outdoors and vice versa, depending on the season.

Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating refrigerant through a simple cycle of evaporation and condensation. Refrigerant is pumped between two heat exchanger coils. Coil one evaporates the refrigerant at low pressure and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed on the way to the other coil, where it condenses at high pressure. The coil then releases the heat it absorbed earlier in the cycle.
